I believe in the transformative power of magic, particularly in relation to mental health. With over 20 years of experience in healthcare and education, I have a unique perspective on how magic can positively impact wellbeing. My journey began as a mental health nurse in 2002, which laid the foundation for my understanding of mental health challenges.
Now, as Jim the Magician, I combine my passion for sleight of hand magic with insights from my previous career to create magic for mental health that uplifts and inspires. Magic isn't just about tricks; it's about connection, joy, and healing.
In 2018, I had the opportunity to write, produce, and perform my show "Madness: Reality or Illusion?" at the Edinburgh Art Festival, held at The Pleasance Courtyard and Palm House. This thought-provoking performance explores the concepts of reality and illusion, challenging audiences to question their perceptions of the world.
‘Madness: Reality or Illusion?' is a thought-provoking entertaining exploration of what is real and not real; how do we know; and who decides. Drawing from my background in mental health, magic, and spirituality, I engage the audience with captivating magic tricks and personal stories as a former mental health nurse. This unique blend of magic and mental health not only entertains but also stimulates meaningful conversations about the subject.

I am also interested in raising awareness in mental health within magicians. Working as a magician can be a lonely experience. Not only as magicians have to keep their secrets hidden from others, but also as the profession is dominated by men who stereotypically are macho and are afraid to show their true feelings.
After visiting the Blackpool Magic Convention, I wrote a blog about this subject, which encapsulates my feelings on this, here.
As an experienced magician in Edinburgh, I am proud to have participated in the Edinburgh Art Festival, where I aim to raise awareness of mental health through the art of magic. Click here for more information.
