Day 312 – Reflections on Lockdown

posted in: Stories | 0

It feels like I’ve spent all day on Zoom today, although it’s only been since 5pm.

First up was ‘Drinks with Hannah’, hosted by The Melting Pot and then the Celtic Energy Gang Gathering as we usually meet up at Celtic Connections every January but this time its all virtual.  I even put a shirt on for the occasions!

Today, we were all devastated to hear the news that the ‘normal’ Heb Celt Festival has also been postponed again, this is the other place we all meet up every year.

Before 7 hours of Zoom calls this evening, I spent the day around the canal.  Doing paid work and then a walk with Honey along the canal.

It has rained most of the day today and still raining now.  But we managed to find a gap in the rain for our walk 🙂

We walked to Bridge No. 5 and back, which for those who know Edinburgh is Meggetland.

Things We No Longer Use

From the Zoom gatherings this evening, we’ve come up with a few more for this section.

To recap we have covered – Kilts (Day 300), Irons (Day 301), Suit and Tie (Day 302), Passports (Day 303), Massive Travel Delays (Day 304), Clothes (Day 305) and High Heels (Day 311).

So today we are looking at Taxi’s.

When did you last use a taxi?  None of us discussing could remember when?  Where have all the taxis gone?

Doing an internet search I found a BBC News article published on 19th January 2021.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-55723550

The Scottish Government is offering the 38,000 taxi drivers in Scotland a £1500 grant, the article states:

“Councils will approach the estimated 38,000 drivers who could benefit, urging them to claim the cash, which is aimed at helping them cover fixed costs at a time when Covid-19 has seen their incomes fall massively”.

The article goes onto state that 80% of taxi drivers have lost up to three quarters of their income, due to bars, restaurants and shops being closed (with current restrictions).

Another BBC News article published in October 2020, states that taxi drivers are earning £40 for a 14 hour shift.

As I come to the end of this blog, it’s now past midnight and the second Zoom gathering is still going on.  I have them next to me chatting away on my tablet.

This evening I had a roast chicken, from a ‘roast in a bag’, which I’ve never heard of before – just put the chicken in the oven in it’s bag and take it out a few hours later.  Superb!

The evening of gatherings have certainly helped increase my energy and mood, so good to ‘hang out’ with friends.  The current chat amongst everyone is speculating when will lockdown restrictions begin to ease?  May?  June?  July? – all have been suggested.  Others think it won’t be until the autumn or even next year that we will return to some kind of ‘normality’.  How will the world have changed by then?

Today it has rained most of the day, although at parts the canal is still frozen.  It has definitely be warmer again today.

Hope you’ve had a Fun Friday.

Jim x
