Day 245 – Reflections on Lockdown

posted in: Stories | 1

A regular weekday for me and Honey today.

After morning QiGong, we headed to my flat, via Mo Beans Coffee Shop.  Took Honey round the cemetery, as it was getting dark.  Then a bit later, came home this evening, had dinner and started the blog.

However, this evening, for the first time since I moved in, I have decided not to light the wood burner!  It is 11 degrees outside, although raining and windy, I have decided to see how the night goes without the fire.

Last night, when we went to bed, the boat was at 37 degrees!  I couldn’t sleep, eventually falling asleep in my t-shirt on top of the covers.  At 5.30am, I woke up cold and so got under the covers.  I generally didn’t sleep so well because it was so hot!  I will see how it goes tonight.

When I sat down to write the blog, I realised I didn’t have a photo of Honey for the Blog Cover Photo.  So I bribed her to go outside in the rain, in exchange for some biscuits!

Lockdown Restrictions Corner

Today Boris Johnson set out tougher post-lockdown tiers for England, which will return from 2nd December.

Tier 1: Medium

  • Rule of Six for meeting indoors and outdoors.
(my understanding of the English Rule of Six is that 6 people from up to 6 different households can meet).
  • Pubs and restaurants – close at 11pm (last orders at 10pm).
  • Minimise travel as much as possible.
  • Work from home where possible.
  • Sport Events & Live Performances (e.g. theatres) – limited numbers allowed to watch.
  • Personal care (including hairdressers) – open.

Tier 2: High

  • Not households can meet indoors
  • Rule of Six – Outdoors
  • Pubs and restaurants – close at 11pm (last orders at 10pm).
  • Alcohol only allowed to be served with a substantial meal.
  • Sport Events & Live Performances (e.g. theatres) – limited numbers allowed to watch.
  • Personal care (including hairdressers) – open

Tier 3: Very High

  • No household mixing – indoors or outdoors, in private gardens or hospitality venues.
  • Rule of Six – outdoors in parks.
  • Pubs and restaurants – closed.  Except for takeaways.
  • Indoor entertainment venues – closed.
  • Do not travel in and out of area.
  • Personal care (including hairdressers) – open.

Seems quite simple to me, although less severe to the restrictions in Scotland.

Will be interesting to see if these change more in months to come.

Face-Mask Corner

Today we have Max who works at Mo Beans Coffee Shop.  Max last appeared in Face-Mask Corner on Day 179.

Max got his face-covering for Christmas many years ago, when he had long hair.  He used it to keep his hair back.

As I come to the end of this blog, it is a short one, but I should be in bed by just after 11pm which is good.

I continue to settle into boat life, it’s 3 weeks tonight since I have moved in.  The temperature is currently 14 degrees on the boat, a lot colder than the 37 degrees last night!!  Hopefully I will not be too cold through the night and Honey the Dog will be OK.  Maybe I will use my hot water bottle 🙂

It will be interesting to see how effective the new English lockdown measures are.  Although, they are said to be tighter than before, they seem a lot less tight than the Scottish ones.  Scottish ‘Rule of Six’, is just 2 households can meet, rather than up to 6!  We haven’t been allowed in each others homes in weeks, in fact months!  In Edinburgh, most pubs and restaurants have been closed for many weeks and we are not in full-lockdown.

Today it has rained for much of the day and this evening it is windy, the boat is rocking and creaking in the wind.

Hope you’ve had a good start to your week.

Morning Jim! 37 degrees .! My god it must be rossting 😉

Hot water bottles are the best. I use one on my feet during the day because other I get cold feet just sitting at my desk !

And I totally agree with you the rule of 6 with 6 households is a bit too much. Scotland has tight restrictions indeed but maybe a Rule in between would be more sensible ? Rule of 4?

Hope you slept better last night 🙂
